Stories of Love...
When my sister and her husband said they were going to become
foster parents our whole family thought they were nuts.
You see, Dora and Sam were a GQ couple. She is a travel agent
(and former Filipino beauty queen) and he is the Navy. Needless
to say, they always looked great and had an extremely organized
and orderly life. On top of that, they always had plenty of parenting
advice for the rest of the family on how we were raising our kids. They had been married for over ten years without kids. We were
pretty sure that they were in over their heads. They didn’t
want to just have kids but somebody else’s kids. They were
somebody else’s problems, not ours. This was going to ruin
their lives. Three years ago, they became foster parents for twin three-year-old
girls and their two-year-old brother. I know the first year was
a little rough. They went from zero children to three toddlers
over night. We tease Dora that she didn’t comb her hair for
six months. I even caught Sam trying to polish his shoes with a
diaper wipe. That Christmas Sam got up in front of the whole family
and apologized for giving all of us parenting advise over the years. The kids weren’t able to go back to their biological family.
Sam and Dora adopted them this year. The courts have said that
they are a part of the family now but they were a part of our family
in our hearts long before the courts said it. God blessed these children with Sam and Dora and God blessed us
in the process. |
