Our Family Find staff works with youth living in foster care to make connections with extended family that can be helpful in many different ways. Staff act like detectives doing genealogical research to find extended family members of each youth. They send out letters to relatives they hope can contribute to the lives of these youth. Relationships with birth families provide a sense of belonging and help youth develop a greater sense of identity.
If interested, able, and willing, some newly identified relatives are able to share family stories and history including health information with the youth, some are able to extend invitations to visits and participation in family gatherings, some begin a phone relationship, and others commit to remembering birthdays and Christmas. Any positive connections have the potential to improve the lives of these youth.
