On May 6th, 2025, Spokane marked National Foster Care Day with a vibrant community event that brought together foster families, prospective caregivers, and local organizations dedicated to supporting children in care. The celebration featured 16 partner organizations offering resources and information to help caregivers navigate the foster care system.
There was a panel discussion where attendees heard from youth with lived experiences in foster care. Two youth who’ve spent nearly a decade in the system shared candid reflections on the importance of compassionate, committed foster parents.
“It’s the whole nature versus nurture thing. If you’re raised around good people who actually care, you’re going to be a good person who actually cares,” one youth said.
Foster Home Licensor/Recruiter, Kelsey Doerr, organized the event and emphasized that becoming a foster parent is more accessible than many realize.
“There’s always a need for foster parents,” she said, adding that anyone with space in their heart and home can make a difference.
This event was a reminder of the ongoing need for supportive foster families and the vital role community organizations play in providing resources and guidance.
