Meet Bess, our newest courthouse facility dog

Oct 1, 2025

LCSNW is so excited to welcome Bess, our newest courthouse facility dog to the Spokane team.

At just a year and a half old, Bess is already beginning an important role: providing comfort, emotional support, and a calming presence to survivors and community members navigating some of life’s most difficult moments.

Courthouse facility dogs are specially trained service dogs that work alongside advocates and professionals to support individuals involved in legal proceedings, healing journeys, and other high-stress situations. Whether someone is preparing to share their story, meeting with an advocate, or participating in court-related processes, a facility dog’s presence can help reduce anxiety, increase feelings of safety, and make intimidating environments feel more welcoming.

Bess, a black Labrador with a gentle spirit, recently completed an intensive week-long training camp on Bainbridge Island alongside her handler, Po. During the training, the pair strengthened their partnership, learned more than 90 specialized cues, and developed the skills needed to work together effectively in supportive settings.

As Bess and Po settle into their new roles, they will continue building trust, refining their teamwork, and preparing to serve survivors and families throughout our community.

And for those familiar with our canine team, here’s a fun fact: Bess is the niece of Walker, our other beloved facility dog who has helped provide comfort and support to countless individuals over the years.

We are grateful to welcome Bess to the LCSNW family and look forward to the many lives she will touch through her quiet companionship, unwavering presence, and ability to bring comfort when it is needed most. 🐾
