Meet Sam, a Homework Helper making a difference for Compass Housing Alliance and LCSNW
Every homework assignment completed and question answered helps a student move closer to success.
Each Thursday in Seattle, volunteer Sam Lee goes above and beyond to support students with their academic goals while fostering confidence, responsibility, and a love of learning. Sam is part of the Homework Helpers team at Compass Housing Alliance.
From helping with projects and essays, to math and science, Sam and his fellow volunteers’ dedication and kindness make them valued members of our LCSNW volunteer team and important role models for our youth.
As a young professional in the technology field, Sam was looking to give back to the community when a friend recommended Homework Helpers.
The program enlists four volunteers to support 8-10 youth aged kindergarten to middle school who live in Compass on Dexter. Compass on Dexter is one of Compass’s affordable housing programs with 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments. It is a great home for families, right in the heart of South Lake Union. Seattle-based Compass was established over a century ago and became a Division of LCSNW in 2026.
Sam said he was inspired to volunteer as a tutor because he knows the big impact education can have on a child’s life.
“I want to help give them an advantage.”
Sam understands the importance of showing up and providing consistent support. One of the best parts of volunteering is when he witnesses an “Aha moment.” That’s when a child has been struggling to tackle a problem, then Sam helps them use a different approach and sees the moment when it sticks.
“No one is incapable of learning; you just need to figure out the right way to teach them.”
Every child is unique, and Sam has learned to be adaptive. He assesses the needs and comes up with ways of addressing problems that best suit the child. He is inspired by the Compass staff and volunteers because they provide continuous support and organize fun events, all while remaining focused and dedicated.
“Seeing the kids advance and get better at a subject” keeps him coming back.
When asked what he would say to someone interested in volunteering, Sam said he wants them to “find their passion and what they value most.”
Through his dedication, patience, and commitment to helping children succeed, Sam Lee has made a lasting impact. We are grateful for his time, compassion, and positive influence on children in our community.
