The brain develops inside the scaffolded, co-regulated relationship. That means as time goes on, children need less and less direct adult support and interaction to do things- things like make breakfast, clean their room, or regulate their behaviors. A 3-year-old’s ability to access internal impulse control is far different than a 15-year-old’s ability. So we structure their environment appropriately and don’t leave them alone 🙂

When big kids lack big kids skills, we MUST go through the same scaffolding process. It looks different but it’s still a scaffolding process. Whether it be the skill of cleaning their room, demonstrating impulse control, or having emotional regulation- we help them develop it through scaffolding and COREGULATION. Coregulation happens with presence, help, guidance, assistance. MEET THE NEED first. Trust that as the need is met, the normal trajectory of development will encourage growth.

Giving big kids the coregulation that their ‘little kid brain’ needs ISN’T holding them back or hindering them. It’s building their brain!
