It started with diapers, but an alert LCSNW team member figured out this mom's needs ran deeper. What an uplifting story of #HealthJusticeHope. #yamhillcounty#reliefnurseriesAmy's Story: Amy first came to connect with A Family Place during her weekly visit to the local diaper bank. At first she told volunteers and staff she was fine, she just needed diapers. After a few months, she began to open up and trust outreach worker Romina with her story. Amy was a mother of three young children. While she loved each one fiercely, her third child was unplanned and added both financial and physical stress to Amy’s family life. While she used to be very physically active, she found herself isolated and depressed at home with her new baby and two other young children. Romina listened to Amy and helped her seek support for her postpartum depression. Romina also worked with Amy during home visits to make small, achievable goals such as a 10 minute walk each day with the kids outdoors. These simple but achievable goals greatly increased Amy’s outlook and supported her mental health. Romina was also able to help Amy connect with other community resources to help support her family in times of financial need, as she and many other parents have struggled to meet the challenge of inflated costs to everyday items.
Once depressed and isolated at home, Amy is now flourishing. Her kids are meeting important milestones and participating in our Relief Nursery classrooms with great success. Romina had this to say about her work with Amy: "Working with Amy, seeing her efforts to be a better mother to her children, and being an example of resilience and dedication has been encouraging." We are honored to walk alongside Amy and take great pride in being the ones trusted in her time of need.
